Before that, for a long time since July 18, 2021, due to concerns about the Covid-19 epidemic, the Chinese side had temporarily stopped importing Vietnamese dragon fruit through Lao Cai.

This also causes import-export turnover through Lao Cai in 2021 to decrease sharply, especially the amount of dragon fruit, which is the main export product here, decreases by 40% compared to the previous year.

According to Mr. Ha Duc Thuan, Deputy Head of the Economic Zone Management Board of Lao Cai province, the resumption of dragon fruit exports to Lao Cai has great significance, affirming the belief from China about Lao Cai’s efforts in the future. the construction of “green border gate”, “safe buffer zone” in import and export.

“Recently, at border gates on land borders such as Lang Son and Mong Cai, dragon fruit could not be exported or exported very slowly. Therefore, when dragon fruit is cleared through Lao Cai, it will help reduce the pressure load. Because it can’t be exported, the price is also very low, so exporting dragon fruits will create conditions for farmers to sell at a higher price,” added Mr. Thuan.

At the present time, every day there are about 400 means of customs clearance through Lao Cai; in which, about 100 cars are exported, the rest are imported cars. Main export products are peeled board, tapioca starch, dried cassava chips and a number of agricultural products; Imported goods are mainly vegetables, tubers, fruits, fertilizers, chemicals and some raw materials for domestic production.

It is expected that when dragon fruit exports are resumed, the number of vehicles carrying goods through Lao Cai border gate will increase. In order to ensure smooth import and export activities, the authorities at the border gate also widely inform businesses to proactively plan cargo transport plans, ensure safety in epidemic prevention and control to meet the stated request.
