Vietnamese wood products have earned a lot of recognition globally. So how to import acacia wood from Vietnam?

This post will discuss its origin, the current market for importing this product, and the detailed shipping process. Let’s read on to discover!

The Origin

Acacia has a variety of applications, from hardwood furniture to water-soluble products. Growing this tree for furniture production is the most typical application.

History

The trees are native to subtropical and tropical areas of the world, especially Australia and Africa, where they are famous veld and savanna monuments.

People give this tree different names, such as Asian walnut or wattle. The word “wattle” refers to an antique Teutonic verb that means “to weave” dates back to 700 CE.

Varieties

There are many acacia species. Each comes with a set of applications. You can distinguish some by looking at their texture and color.

Covering them all will take much time. Hence, we’ll go through the most popular kinds in Vietnam.

  • Koa

Koa has a wavy texture with a rough, broad-grained structure. It has a lovely hue that is close to mahogany, with reddish-brown, caramel, and light golden tones.

  • Melanoxylon

Melanoxylon comes in various hues, ranging from moderate gold to a reddish tone that is quite similar to koa.

  • Acuminata

Acuminata’s heartwood has a lovely red hue. Meanwhile, its sapwood is a brighter yellow. The texture is uniform and delicate all over.

  • Auriculiformis

Wattle heartwood is light brown or dark red and has a very durable, fine and straight grain with a beautiful figure.

  • Mangium

Mangium has a shimmering brownish-yellow heartwood with a medium pattern and a tight grain structure. Because of the similarity of texture and color to hickory, people also call it “hickory wattle.”

  • Baileyana

Bailey is less well-known for its timber, but the tree has a beautiful appearance and much more stunning yellow blossoms.

  • Cambagei

Cambagei’s heartwood has a dark reddish-brown hue with chocolate brown stripes that varies from moderate to dark. The sapwood is much lighter and has a distinctive golden color.

Current Market Of Importing Vietnamese Acacia Wood

According to an industry source, Vietnam is currently one of the major exporters of planted acacia wood chips in the pulp sector in both China and Japan.

Over the last six years, the country has steadily increased shipments and is currently the world’s fourth-biggest hardwood chip supplier.

Export value

Wood exports brought in $1,564 billion in the first two months of 2020. (18% increased compared to the same period of 2019).

The value of 2019 exports was $2,077 billion as of March. The 18.5% growth rate from the previous year seems to have remained the same.

However, with the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, value exports to five key destinations (the United States, Japan, South Korea, the European Union, and China) accounted for 87% of Vietnamese exports last year.

Sales of wood chips, most Acacia, have gradually increased over the last five years. China and Japan have been the two leading importers, with South Korea and Taiwan accounting for approximately 10% of total shipments.

Last year, they were among the cheapest chips shipped to Japan, with only more affordable products from Thailand and Malaysia.

Opportunities

In Vietnam, the forest sector is becoming extremely relevant. In order to become less reliant on imported wood materials, the government is boosting its domestic hardwood resources.

This country has planted 1.1 million hectares of acacia plantations for timber production. Smaller businesses with 1 to hectare woodlots account for about half of the resource.

Acacia plantings have advanced as a major source of revenue for rural economies and national exports.

The sector’s expansion will be contingent on raising and maintaining output from the existing land base, which is mostly in its second rotation.

Moreover, although there have been few analyses on sustainable farming, the evidence available shows that there are good opportunities for boosting soil quality.
