The Origin of Vietnamese Chili

Chilli is a fruit of the plant family “Capsicum”. It appeared in Vietnam for the first time around 20 years ago. At that time, farmers in Dong Thap Province were the first to grow these plants.

Apart from Dong Thap, some other provinces also grow them, including Thai Binh, Quang Nam, Binh Dinh, Quang Binh, An Giang, Tien Giang, Long An, Vinh Phuc, and many others.

The growing area was initially rather modest. With about 1,800 hectares of land, this location has become one of Vietnam’s greatest growing sites.

According to the lunar calendar, the harvest season usually begins in October or November and lasts through April, May. Vietnam’s most productive crop of these fruits has an annual yield of almost 25,000 MTs.

Little fruits, according to locals, would be only ideal for island soils, giving a reddish hue and a more pungent taste.

The plants are flexible and may be cultivated all year, although they are healthiest in the dry period.

They begin to yield after two months of sowing. These fruits begin to harvest after around two months, with harvest intervals of 3-4 days.

Farmers opt to grow and harvest crops monthly to minimize pricing pressures caused by bulk harvesting.

Vietnamese farmers have increased their income and improved their living standards thanks to cultivating these fruits. Processing these fruits helps locals generate a consistent income throughout the harvest season.

Fresh fruits are picked and sent to Ho Chi Minh City after harvest. Frozen Red Chili is selected to export to the world markets while the remaining is sent to processing factories to produce chilli powder or chilli and salt mixture.

The Ministry of Science and Technology granted Dong Thap chilli a collective trademark in 2012.

In addition, the governors assist farmers in improving the value of the fruit by promoting safe production and how to use proper fertilizer.

Some popular varieties in Vietnam today include:

  • Bell pepper
  • Bird’s eye chilli
  • Hot red pepper
  • Peter
  • Purple chilli
  • Bhut Jolokia
  • Yellowhorn pepper
  • Pepper Tree Octopus

The Current Market For Importing

When it comes to exporting agricultural products in general and chilli products in particular, China’s first market to mind, sadly, since March 2020, the outcome of this commodity exported to the Chinese market has decreased significantly.

The prices have jumped from about October 2020 to 40,000-45,000 VND/kg of hot pepper grade 1, up from around 25,000-30,000 VND two months earlier.

The price of chilli in Gia Lai is up to 120,000 VND/kg in some places. The price is extremely high, but supply is not enough for demands. Traders even go to the fields to buy them all.

The sharp increase in prices at the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 has many reasons.

  • Low prices at the beginning of 2020 caused farmers to reduce the area of chilli peppers later, causing a decrease in supply;
  • Floods in the Central region;
  •  Several other markets such as Thailand, China, and Korea boosted the purchase of this commodity.

The Chinese market suddenly imported a lot of Vietnamese chilli peppers in the first two months of this year to meet domestic demand. That’s because China could not grow these plants in the winter crop, while the Covid-19 epidemic caused some supplies to be interrupted.

Therefore, Vietnam’s chilli export turnover to China reached 6.8 million USD in January 2021, up 21.2% compared to December 2020 and up 67.2% compared to January 2020.

In many localities across the country, chilli production is mainly for export. The main output of this commodity depends mainly on the Chinese market. Up to 80% of chilli production in some localities depends on free trade traders.
