Export Market in Vietnam

Vietnam is a potential honey export market. The proof is that this country is one of the significant honey exporters in the world market.
According to the General Department of Customs statistics, Vietnam currently ranks 6th in the world and 2nd in Asia (after China) in exporting these goods.
Vietnam produces more than 55,000 tons of honey and more than 1,000 tons of beeswax every year. About 85-90% of these products are exported.
The primary consumers of these products are the US and European countries and Japan. According to analysis, these are strict markets with high requirements for quality.
However, the US Department of Commerce (DOC) has just announced a preliminary anti-dumping duty on Vietnamese honey. Specifically, the general tax rate for all Vietnamese honey exporting enterprises is 412.49%. This tax is more than double the rate initially proposed by the American Honey Manufacturers Association (207%).
According to the Vietnam Exporters Association chairman, the country currently has about 35 exporting enterprises. More than 95% of Vietnam’s product is exported to the US.
So, if the US imposes an anti-dumping tax, it will be challenging for Vietnamese honey to output, adversely affecting 35,000 Vietnamese beekeepers.
Some agricultural experts believe that we need to continue diversifying markets and expanding exports to many other countries worldwide. Also, priority is increasing the volume of honey exports to the EU and Asian countries, especially the Muslim community. As a result, we will avoid relying too much on the market like the present one.
We still hope for the future and the efforts of individuals and companies who are enthusiastic about Vietnam’s honey industry.

The export process still has some challenges, especially for inexperienced people. That’s why we provide this detailed guide.
Criteria To Consider
- Antibiotic check
In general, according to the definition of FAO, pure honey must not contain other foreign substances. Standards in the world market do not allow the existence of any antibiotics and residues of pesticides.
The US and European markets are currently paying attention and reacting quite harshly to residues of new antibiotics such as Chloramphenicol, Nitrofuran, and Fluoroquinolone. Therefore, the countries’ customs will directly inspect these criteria for imported goods.
Some beekeepers use antibiotics to treat bee diseases during the honey harvesting season. Thus, the antibiotic may remain in the honey. To solve this problem, honey export companies need to actively clarify this and only choose reputable product sources.
- Test by Radioisotope Carbon 13 (c13)
This method can determine the content of C4 sugars derived from cane sugar or starch.
If you feed bees with sugar to make honey, the C4 sugar in the honey remains intact. If this content is more than 7%, they will conclude your product is fake honey. With this test method, they can detect any kind of fake honey.
It is the most advanced method, thoroughly applied to the US, European, and Saudi Arabian markets.
- Packing
Typically, export companies use large enameled non-iron drums, holding from 290 to 300 Kg for each drum. Each 20′ container can hold from 62 to 64 drums.
